The William L. Guy Federal Building and United States Courthouse is located in the downtown core of Bismarck, North Dakota. Designed by the Bismarck architectural firm of Leonhard and Askew, the building completed in 1964 is a representation of the Formalist style of architecture. Specifically, the vertical orientation of the building with emphasis on lines and geometric shapes, recessed windows, and a flat roof are all defining characteristics of the Formalist style. In 1999, Tvenge Associates Architects & Planners, P.C., designed the modernization of the building, adding space to the ground floor and modifying the building entrance. The building is named after former North Dakota Governor William L. Guy.
